Asics Gel-DS Trainer 14

Summary | Full Review | Reader Reviews | Gallery | Specs | Discussion

The DS Trainer has gone back in time to its most successful incarnation, number 7. Having discovered that the last few versions came up small, Asics has returned to its older last. A new 'green' outsole contains rice husks which help it grip in the wet (as the rubber wears down, new pieces of rice are uncovered, renewing grip). The shoe has fewer overlays, and angled mesh at the sides to improve breathability, and asymmetric lacing.

Sure enough, testers who are veteran DS Trainer fans regarded this as a return to form, offering good support for such a lightweight shoe. No one noticed the wet grip but the upper feels lighter and more breathable and the subtle asymmetric lacing seems to improve comfort.

Our wear-testers say:

"I really like these shoes, but didn't get on so well with the last two or three years of DS Trainers. I'll definitely be buying more of these!"
