Do shoes break down with time or miles?

Does anyone know the magic retirement calculation for running shoes?

I buy the same trainer all the time and they don't last the same miles. They seem to last about 750miles in the summer months and 500 miles in the winter months so I can only assume that the mud and wet makes them break down quicker.

I judge by how my feet feel, when i start to get a pain in the ball of my foot after a run then i know i need new trainers.

mud and wet

or temperature - cold reduces elasticity and the foamy rubbery stuff fractures more easily

I'm getting about 500 miles out of my shoes, but at lot of the miles are on rough tracks or hills. They are retired when bounce is lost or I can see a toe.

definately when bounce is lost and pushing down on the inner and it's hard to touch.I know when I run and it feels different.I go about 600 miles. It's good to have 3 pairs, initially expensive but pays off in the long run........oh thats road, track and trail shoes.

I change every 3 or 4 months.n Like the others suggest you can 'feel' when you need new shoes after a while.
