My VLM 2010: NotReallyARunner (6:10)
By NotReallyARunner on 04/05/2010 21:37:52
When my right arm was really aching the next day, I realised that it was from all the high-fives with the kids along the way – great fun!

I first applied to run the London Marathon 27 years ago, then 15 years ago.  Six years ago, I made the decision that I would keep on applying until I got in as I’d heard that if you applied six years in a row, you’d automatically get a place.  Last

A journey through pain - my experience of hitting the wall and making a quick mental recovery

My name is Alex Milne. I am 20 years old and this was my third (consecutive) London Marathon. The previous two went horribly wrong - in the first, I was aiming for 3:10 but finished in 3:30; in the second, I wanted sub-3:00 and finished in 3

Tripped up by another runner at Mile 20 I was reduced to a walk, but determined to run the last mile no matter how slow or painful

This was my first ever marathon and it was the best running event I have ever taken part in.  The race, however, did not go as planned.  I spent nine months training, completing two 17-mile runs and a 20-mile road race five weeks before (3

Doomed, doomed I say ....

Well, my Virgin London Marathon in 2010 was supposed to be a triumph. I had racked up more miles than ever and was, I hoped, heading for a glorious 2:59.59.It was not to be, and really I knew that before I started. I was in the Good for Age start

Sometimes running doesn't need to be about PBs - in what other sport can you compete in the same race as Olympic Champions?

This was my second London Marathon and certainly the most unprepared I have ever been for a race. I had deferred the previous year after being successful in the ballot, so knew I had to complete it this year. But towards the end of 2009 I

A big thank you to the physio on mile 21.

Crippling cramp at 21 miles made me come to a standstill until a physio got me going again

! Cramp did hit on the way to the finish line but each time the crowd just shouted me on. I got to the finish, having experienced the physical and mental questions a marathon poses, knowing that I FINISHED. And went for a curry and pint soon after!

As a failed sub-3:00 runner, I've decided to go for 10 Championship Starts instead - this time, I must surely win the Most Even Splits Of The Day Award?!

broken) having done a few marathons before. So I decided to stick to  7:30-minute miles and see if it would be  "crash and burn" or "actually I feel quite chipper".As it happened I had one of the best runs (in terms of how I felt) ever and knew when I hit

The Elusive 5 Hours! VLM 2011
By Anne Fearon on 22/04/2011 12:21:19

This was my third consecutive London Marathon and I was better prepared than ever before. I was hoping to beat my previous time of 5:12 but was more than a bit dismayed by the weather report! As I got my pacing horribly wrong in my first marathon I

What can I say?! Everything went right on the day - I've never felt so proud of myself and can't wait for next year!

sustained while running in the icy weather in January. As 9.45am approached I felt excited but surprisingly level-headed as I knew I'd done everything I could to prepare. There I was, standing at the start of the Virgin London Marathon! It was on my list

with everyone else, 15 minutes later we were off! Me: ex-couch potato, three stone lighter and with just over a year of running, doing the London Marathon! It was clear that Linsey was a much quicker runner than me so I told her to leave me but she didn't want
