My VLM 2010: John Whitehead (4:23)
By John Whitehead 4 on 26/04/2010 22:02:12
The knee injury I sustained pre-Christmas made an unwelcome return at the most inconvenient time but that didn't stop me from reaching the finishline

After a few years of running 10Ks and half-marathons, the next challenge was the big one: a marathon. Six months ago (when I first received confirmation I had a ballot place) I was made up and devised my training programme carefully. I felt like

Ups and Downs of London

The was my sixth London Marathon - the first marathon for 15 years - the other five had gone really well, with my best time being 3hr 18mins. This one started off ok but by the fitth mile I had stomach cramps, why I don't know but I had to slow down

I was tripped from behind and stumbled - within minutes, my left ankle was the size of a large golf ball

This was my second London Marathon (fifth marathon in total). Having run my first London Marathon very badly last year - due to lots of niggly injuries throughout training and major cramp on race day at Mile 14 - I was determined to put it right

Marathon jinx - every time I enter a marathon, something always goes wrong, but I keep coming back for more...

pointed out it was still a "race". Not that I was trying to hurry them, but there is a touch of competitive spirit in me.I am not telling people to run with injuries of course - far from it - but I am either a typical marathon runner or just not right

Putting it in perspective

Finally discovering why so many people just want to finish the marathon no matter what it takes.

Celebrating the fact that I had won a place via the public ballot, I had trained hard to achieve a sub-4:00 time. I was overjoyed at recording two half-marathons during the training both under 1:50. A few minor injuries over the 16 weeks were nursed

My VLM 2010: Fruit Pastel Girl (5:20.22)

Tripped up by another runner at Mile 20 I was reduced to a walk, but determined to run the last mile no matter how slow or painful

This was my first ever marathon and it was the best running event I have ever taken part in.  The race, however, did not go as planned.  I spent nine months training, completing two 17-mile runs and a 20-mile road race five weeks before (3

Doomed, doomed I say ....

Well, my Virgin London Marathon in 2010 was supposed to be a triumph. I had racked up more miles than ever and was, I hoped, heading for a glorious 2:59.59.It was not to be, and really I knew that before I started. I was in the Good for Age start

My VLM experience, taken from my blog at http://pingu1874.wordpress.com/ and written the day after the race.

Yesterday I completed the Virgin London Marathon. I have so much more to say about the whole experience that I really don’t know where to start.Sod it, I’ll launch straight into the race itself which didn’t entirely go to plan! To set some context

Loved It - Maybe Too Much!

with everyone else, 15 minutes later we were off! Me: ex-couch potato, three stone lighter and with just over a year of running, doing the London Marathon! It was clear that Linsey was a much quicker runner than me so I told her to leave me but she didn't want

An amazing day - my quads are aching but I'm still grinning!

I've been running for about eight years and completed the London Marathon in just over 5:30 in 2007.  I'd trained three days a week and my longest run was 18 miles. I didn't realise the impact the food you ate the night before could have (cheese
