What does HR Max really mean?
by tampopo

I have just bought a Polar HR Monitor and I am trying to get my head around the concept of Maximum Heart rate. I have read in many places that a person's Max HR is approx 220 minus their age. So, I get a figure but what does it really mean

heart rate
by jim Alexander

've calculated that I am running close to 80-90% of my maximum heart rate.  As detailed in my instruction booklet, I should be running at 60-70% of my maximum heart rate in order to lose weight.  I am a little confused, as I also want to maintain/improve my times

is my heart rate too high?
average heart rate of 159 by neil234

thought that seemed a bit high. Many thanks. That depends on what your maximum heart rate is.If you are doing a long run then you might want to run at about 75% of your maximum, but this is no help if you don't know your max. Have a look at this.By the way
