Good article at http://www.aafp.org/afp/991015ap/1687.html on hip pain and different causes.

Hiya peopleWhenever i run (and frequently when i walk...) i get a pain on the very outer edge of my hip. It feels like a clicking motion, as if the leg bone is grinding on the hip bone (excuse my lack of latin medical terms!). It only seems to happen in the left hip, and occurs at the point where my weight is wholly on the left let.I'm not too sharp on injuries, so does anyone have any idea? Thanks

I was complaining of clicking hip and slight pain in my right hip and i was diagnosed with labral tear after having an MRI scan on my hip.My doctor adviced me to have a cortosone injection and Manipulation of the hip(this was to get rid of the scar tissue around the tear) and then have 2 months off any form of exercise(swimming, cycling and running - being a keen triathlete this is an absolute nightmare). This i was told would not fix the tear but get rid of the symptons i.e. clicking and the pain. To fix the tear surgery would be needed and he could give me no guaratee that it would fix it in fact he said it could get worse.6 weeks into the 2 months and the clicking is not back yet, but the hip still gives some pain. I am hoping that it will recover in the next couple of weeks. The time off is doing my head in but fingers crossed it will be worth it.Hope that helps!Cheers,Ian

I have been getting exactly the same - spooky, on the left hipI thought it was cos i just bought some MBT's and working the mile and half to work,GJ01 - how painful is it? Mines just a niggle really, does it ever spread to under your bum cheek (more medical terms!)

Other possibility is bursitis which is where the fluid filled sac that acts as a cushion between joints becomes inflamed. You've probably heard of it as tennis/golfers elbow, housemaids knee. I used to get a lot of probs with bursitis in my left hip when I had a hamstring problem. If it is bursitis then ibuprofen gel/tablets will help, usual rest and ice. You could always try taking glucosamine as well.http://www.umm.edu/altmed/ConsConditions/Bursitiscc.html

Unfortunately rest is not an option (no really!). I've got a triathlon in a month so have to keep up the regular running to some extent.A few days rest usually makes it go away for a bit, and running on the machines in the gym is a bit better. The pain is rarely enough to make me stop, except on the longer runs (12k). While walking i can sometimes feel it, but it doesn't hurt. The pain is on the very outer edge of the hip.I think a short term solution may be to try those ITB stretches, as that was mentioned somewhere, as well as good old RICE.ThanksGJ
