Even the same manufacturers watches and
HRM
straps are not compatible.I cannot use my 310xt
HRM
strap with my Forerunner 305 and vice versa

I don't think there is a common standard or compatibility across manufacturers, although a lot of gym equipment will work with Polar
hrm
belts so I suppose that is the nearest there is to a standard.I'm pretty sure your Nike watch won't work with, eg, a Timex
hrm
belt but happy to be proved wrong if someone knows better. That said, if you're looking to get a GPS watch the Garmin Forerunner 305 (with
hrm
) is at the time of writing cheaper on Amazon than the Forerunner 205 (identical to the 305 only without the
hrm
).

Stupid question probably but do different gps/watch manufacturers use different connectivity for
HRM
chest strap monitors?I have an old Nike watch with
HRM
chest strap that still works fine but would like to get a new gps watch- poss garmin, poss Nike etc.- would a garmin watch be able to talk to a Nike strap and so on?I'm assuming that for commercial reasons the equivalent of a Bluetooth type common protocol doesnt exist for
HRM
does it so I'd have to buy the associated accessories to ensure it all works? Thanks for any help
