Even the same manufacturers watches and HRM straps are not compatible.I cannot use my 310xt HRM strap with my Forerunner 305 and vice versa

I don't think there is a common standard or compatibility across manufacturers, although a lot of gym equipment will work with Polar hrm belts so I suppose that is the nearest there is to a standard.I'm pretty sure your Nike watch won't work with, eg, a Timex hrm belt but happy to be proved wrong if someone knows better. That said, if you're looking to get a GPS watch the Garmin Forerunner 305 (with hrm) is at the time of writing cheaper on Amazon than the Forerunner 205 (identical to the 305 only without the hrm).

Stupid question probably but do different gps/watch manufacturers use different connectivity for HRM chest strap monitors?I have an old Nike watch with HRM chest strap that still works fine but would like to get a new gps watch- poss garmin, poss Nike etc.- would a garmin watch be able to talk to a Nike strap and so on?I'm assuming that for commercial reasons the equivalent of a Bluetooth type common protocol doesnt exist for HRM does it so I'd have to buy the associated accessories to ensure it all works? Thanks for any help
