Asics Gel Guts £45

Evaluation The Gel Guts harks back to Asics's popular Trespass and Canyon shoes. It's a keenly priced, no-nonsense, hardwearing workhorse of a trail shoe. It's more Land Rover Defender than Range Rover Vogue, which means it's the kind of shoe you won't feel guilty about taking through the muddiest bogs and the deepest puddles. For £45, you get a pretty basic, single-density midsole, firm cushioning, some stability and plenty of grip. Despite its weight, the Guts feels pretty quick - thanks largely to its responsive low-profile sole and forefoot flex grooves. The upper did seem to take a bit of wearing in, though - it was rather stiff on the first couple of outings.
In short The Guts's best feature is its price - it's great value. But that's not all - it's a quick shoe with a sure-footed and stable ride.

As a previous owner of the Asics Dolomite trail shoe and Asics fan, I was looking forward to these and have not been disapointed. I needed something that I could do a few road miles in so an out and out mud machine was not on, Relatively cheap, hard wearing and with loads of grip they've come up trumps. Not the best cushioned shoe but who wants that on British gloop? They've also washed up well and have got a sensible colour scheme. I went straight out and did 14 miles in them from new without problems and continue to use them for my long runs. They work pretty well on snow too!
