Evaluation If you’re a light, quick runner who wants a good-value, decently stable everyday shoe, you could do well with the Gel Torrance. Entry-level shoes are often reasonably lightweight because – to be honest – there’s not much to them, but the Torrance is amazingly so. It has the design of a day-in, day-out shoe and the weight of a good racer/trainer, and yet it’s not obviously flimsy.
It’s not a high-mileage shoe, though, as you’d expect at this price. Compare it with Asics’s £60 stability shoe, the Gel-1060, and you’ll notice that the Torrance has a softer ride, which in this case translates into a less durable midsole. The upper is more basic, too, though it has a secure fit, an effective speed-lacing system, and a roomier forefoot than
the 1060.
In short The Gel Torrance isn’t built with the responsiveness of a performance trainer, but it does have the exceptionally light weight. If you’re a light, quick runner who doesn’t need huge durability, you’ll find this a hard-to-beat basic model.
