Asics Gel Trabuco 4 £59.99
Weight 412g
Evaluation Asics has trimmed its off-road range down to two shoes: one light and basic (the £40, 314g Gel Canyon), and the other this ultra-protective trail crusher.
The Trabuco is certainly nothing like its 324g predecessor, except for its stability-enhancing medial post and its sturdy plastic midfoot support shank. Its base is much wider (which makes it more stable, if not more nimble), its grip is much deeper (so its better in mud), and its upper is heavier and more protective.
For its weight and the amount of underfoot protection it offers, the Trabuco is like an old-style trail shoe, or an adventure-racing shoe. Currently, two of its most comparable alternatives are the New Balance 804 (£60) or the North Face Ultra 100 (£80). Its not as soft as the New Balance shoe (not an issue for off-road running), and it shares some great qualities with the North Face: a wide base, a low, stable foot position within the shoe, and a super-secure fit with a roomy toe-box.
In short The Trabuco is built for off-road comfort rather than speed, but its sturdy protection comes with good forefoot flexibility, a smooth ride and a good fit.
Try it if you liked New Balance 804 (£60); North Face Ultra 100 (£80); Montrail Leona Divide (£60)
