Evaluation Asics’s lightweight trainers are nearly always gems of stripped-down performance, and this replacement to the Gel Lyte DS fits the bill. It’s not cushioned enough for long distances on hard surfaces, but for responsiveness and smoothness – and decent forefoot grip from the Duosole – it’s excellent.
If it looks familiar, that’s because the outsole and midsole are exactly the same as those of the old Lyte DS 5, a couple of generations back. All that’s new is the upper, which has a stretch one-piece design and a narrower, snugger feel in
the forefoot.
In short It’s basic, but it’s 25g lighter than the last version
of the Gel Lyte DS, which it replaces. The Gel Verdict is a super-responsive shoe for fast training or longer racing, though its cushioning means it’s best on grass.
