Mizuno Wave Phoenix £49.99

Evaluation If you liked last year’s Wave Phoenix – and there’s every reason you would have done – you’ll enjoy the 2001 version. This protective, supportive budget shoe keeps the same thick, cushioned midsole, durable outsole, and fan-shaped stability Wave plate as before; all Mizuno has done is rework the light mesh upper.
The Wave Phoenix isn’t a shoe for anyone with major stability problems, but its broad base and effective midsole support make it a safe option for stability-oriented neutral runners and mild overpronators. It’s also one of the best-looking shoes you can buy under £60 – in fact, it’s very easy to mistake it for the £75 Wave Rider.
In short The Wave Phoenix is a reassuring constant at the £50 mark. It’s a perfect beginner’s shoe, but it wouldn’t let experienced runners down either.
Try it on if you liked Nike Air Alate (£50); New Balance 878 (£65)
