Mizuno Wave Rider £70

Posted: 16 June 2000

This model may still be available on clearance. But we've reviewed a newer version since we published this.

Mizuno’s 327g category-leading cushioned shoe drops by another £5, making it almost unignorable to biomechanically neutral runners who like a light, responsive ride in their everyday shoes. The moderately firm, perky midsole remains the same; though the upper has lost its internal stability strap to simplify it and reduce the cost. (Review of previous version follows:)

Mizuno Wave Rider 2001 £74.99
Weight 335g
Evaluation The Wave Rider was our shoe of the year for 2000, and with good reason. It’s light and responsive, and yet well-cushioned and protective. Your foot sits close enough to the ground for a confident, positive feel, and yet there’s ample shock absorption.
The good news is that very little has changed in the 2001 model. Mizuno has made the outsole more substantial in the forefoot, which should avoid any premature wear. Also, a visible VS1 cushioning pad has been added to the heel-strike area, and the upper’s cosmetics have been changed. In theory, the changes should give a slightly softer heel-strike and a fractionally less flexible forefoot, but in practice our testers didn’t notice any difference. The only noticeable change is that there’s less vertical space in the forefoot than before. That’s because Mizuno has added something called Intercool: forefoot channels designed to move air under your feet.
In short Except for a shallower forefoot fit, the Wave Rider is essentially the same great cushioned shoe as it was last year – and this year it’s £5 cheaper. It’s suitable for anyone who doesn’t have pronounced stability needs, and it’s especially good for faster runners.
Try it on if you liked Adidas Supernova (£70); New Balance 829 (£60); Brooks Hyperion 2 (£80)

I've had these shoes 4 months (normally I renew shoes every 12 months based on my mileage). However the plastic mizuno logo on the sides of the shoes has sawn through the mesh uppers nearly through to my socks on one of them. Has anyone else any experiance of the terible durability of this make & model of running shoe ??
I've tried Nike & New Balance in the past with no problem at all

I'm on my third pair of wave riders and have had no problems with them. I tend to change them about every 4 months (~500 miles) and at that time the only noticable degradation has been in the cushioning.

I've had mine for around 5 months and 300-400 miles, and they are still absolutely fine all round.

I tend to get longer than average out of my shoes, probably because I'm quite light.
