Evaluation Despite being an outdoor brand rather than a running company, The North Face has produced a number of shoes that have proved popular with our off-road and adventure-racing weartesters. The Flight Trail is a decent entry-level off-road shoe that you can also use for short stretches of road. The single-density midsole, which contains a rearfoot cushioning pad, is relatively broad and reasonably stable, with a cushioned, responsive feel. The North Face says that the outsole is dual-purpose, but the lugs aren't the deepest around and they don't grip as well as either the new Mizuno Redhawk or the Asics Gel Guts.
In short The Flight Trail is a respectable, protective shoe that will provide enough grip on light trails, and won't feel unstable when you do hit the road. But it's up against some stiff competition from the running brands at this price.
