Puma Complete Phasis £65

Posted: 22 January 2004

Weight 340g
Evaluation The Complete Phasis is the cushioning sister of the stability Tenos and, apart from the medial post of the latter, the two are very similar. That means a light, responsive, performance-oriented cushioning shoe.
Like the Tenos, Puma has popped its new DuoCELL cushioning system in the Phasis's rearfoot. And as with the Tenos, some testers found the heel strike too firm – particularly fans of shoes such as the Nike Air Pegasus or Asics Gel Cumulus. These are plush shoes, so if you like your cushioning a little firmer, then you'll enjoy the Phasis.
Where both the Phasis and Tenos do score highly, though, is on responsiveness. Light and smooth, the ride feels closer to a performance shoe than an out-and-out cushioning model. Another plus is the comfortable upper, although some narrow-footed testers did note that getting a close fit was hard.
In Short The Phasis isn't the softest cushioned shoe on the market and some runners will find it too firm. But it is light, smooth and responsive, and plusher than previous Pumas.

I needed to settle on a new pair of plates for the FLM. I have been running in Muzzy Wave Riders for the last year and found them comfortable cushioning shoe. Sucking up water in wet weather was a drawback though.
After reading the RW reviews, I decided to try the Wave Creations 2004 and, on the RW Best buy award, the Puma Phasis.
Previously, I have had Asics Gel Nimbus x 2 and Nike Pegasus so I am used to good cushioning.
Went to Maidstone sweatshop and tried the Creations. First thing I noticed was the high arch which ruled them out quite quickly. Nice shoe though - shame.
Then tried the Phasis. Instant comfort!
They felt light and airy, if a little firm on the heel.
Also tried on the latest Nimbus and New Balance 1022(?). The later was very soft in the heel.
But, dispite a less than stable history in cushioning shoes, I went for the Puma because of the comfort and review.
First run of 7 miles - impressive. As the review says; a firm rear foot strike that not all will like, but the forefoot is very plush.
Second run 10 miles, seemed to get even more comfortable. Getting used to the firm heel.
3rd Run - Brentwood half. Felt great. Made the right choice. I did suffer from an injury which had been threatening for a week or two before getting these shoes so I am 90% sure the shoes are not responsible.
Providing I recover from my niggly knee, I will take them for a final test run at Paddock wood, but I'm sure I will run the FLM in them.
Well done Puma.
