Evaluation As competent, big-runner workhorses go, the durable GRID Shadow is hard to beat. Don’t be put off by its weight – it’s actually very wearable, with a pleasing spring to its ride. Saucony manages this by combining a tough polyurethane section of midsole in the rearfoot and midfoot with a lighter, more flexible EVA forefoot. The GRID Shadow is built on a straight last, with a good heel counter and a tough upper, all of which gives it the basic stability that all big runners need. It’s also good value, with a forefoot GTO cushioning pad as well as Saucony’s normal rearfoot GRID unit. If you have biomechanical problems, you should look to a motion control shoe such as Saucony’s £75 GRID Hammer or £60 GRID Sovereign, but for simple durability and support, the Shadow is an outstanding option.
In short The great-value GRID Shadow combines the durability of polyurethane with the smoothness of EVA. It’s an excellent shoe for heavy runners and for heel strikers.
