MdS Training Blog: What to wear!

Spiders, venom pumps and a very special bit of running kit

It’s not something I usually have a problem with - I just reach into the drawer, pull out the closest bit of clobber and bound out the door – but oh, how times have changed (and the weather, and people's opinions of running in 'apple catchers' with We Will Rock You blaring out...)

So I needed something versatile, something that will let me clock up the slow miles in the snow and then, more importantly, isn’t going to turn me in to Fricker Stew in the heat of the desert. Enter my new best threads - X-bionic, developed by leading European textile gurus who have engineered proprietary fibres and fabric constructions to cool you when you're sweating and keep you warm when it's cold. That's ideal for me and I can say (aside from the slightly unflattering tight fit around the derrière) its well up to the job in hand. I was tempted to upload a picture of the unflattering look to complement this post but it’s a site for all the family and I’m sure some like to eat whilst reading – so I opted not to!

I now have effectively only seven weeks left of training and I’m starting to really get excited. My kit list is slowly building with all the essentials: head torch, sleeping bag, anti-venom pump - yes you read correctly, anti venom pump. I hate spiders – I mean, I really hate spiders, like Indiana Jones hates snakes so I wasn’t overly thrilled to find this on the compulsory list – at least Mr Jones had a whip to keep creepy-crawlies at bay! Still, it’s all part of the adventure.

I’d love to hear how you’re all getting on in the build-up to your respective events – keep the miles up and if you can spare a few quid please donate -

Don't worry about the spiders, James; I did MdS 2009 and, in as much as I came across a viper, as mad as a bear with a sore tooth, I never saw a spider! Good luck; you'll love every step.
