20 JUN 2009: MIDNIGHT SUN MARATHON, NORWAY

Running in broad daylight in the middle of the night is something that is hard to do in most places in the world but at 7-degrees north it is possible to do it in Tromso.

Tromso is the northern capital of Norway and from here there is nothing between you and the North Pole. Although it only has a population of around 64,000 it is surprisingly cosmopolitan, with cafes, bars and restaurants supporting a thriving nightlife. From the end of May to July the sun never sets and it is this makes the Midnight Sun Marathon something special.

The marathon takes in the mainland side of Tromso, through Tomosdalan and then you cross onto the Island side of Tromso City, which is the main part of Tromso finishing in the Market Square. As well as the full marathon there is a half marathon, 10km, mini marathon, children's races and a 10km Inline Skating race.

Itinerary

Fri 19 Jun:  Depart on the SAS flight from Heathrow  to Tromso via Oslo, departing at 0720 and arriving at 1335. Transfer to your hotel for 3 nights.

Sat 20 Jun: Day at leisure - marathon start ay 8.30pm and the half marathon 10.30pm.

Sun 21 Jun: The races come to an end. Day at leisure. Transfer to the airport and return flight to Heathrow via Oslo departing at 1745 and arriving 2135.

We will be staying at the modern 4-star Scandic Hotel, which is located on the edge of the town towards the airport but within easy reach of the city centre. All rooms in the Scandic Tromso have bathrooms en suite, hairdryers, colour TV, mini bar and wi fi. The restaurant is on the second floor with great views while the lobby is dominated by a giant Polar Bear. There is an indoor swimming pool and sauna. Buffet Breakfast is included.
