Tri Sport Epping hosted the perfect introduction to triathlons with its Jenny Clark Try-a-Tri.

Now in its 15th year (it is now named in memory of the late club secretary and treasurer, and proceeds go to St Clare Hospice), this is a novice event designed to give competitors a positive experience for their first triathlon.

There was plenty of support from the marshals but no prizes for places - the laudable idea is that everyone's a winner. Before the event, the club even ran a training day to guide newcomers through the rules, practise transitions, try the bike course, work through the kit and learn about bike maintenance.

The race began in Ongar Leisure Centre, with competitors starting at 30-second intervals, snaking 300m up and down each of the six lanes of the pool.

The bike course consisted of two laps of mainly quiet country lanes, with the main challenge coming from a headwind rather than hills. The run was reminiscent of a school event - three laps around the sports fields.

First-timers agreed that the event was a perfect first triathlon experience - not intimidating or too challenging, but inclusive and encouraging.
