Grab A Gilet

The gilet is an invaluable bit of running kit. Here are three you might like to try.

Gore Bike Wear Concept Gilet, £169.99

Gore comes up trumps again with this lightweight, flexible and breathable gilet. Nothing has been left to chance, from the ergonomically shaped, fleece-trimmed collar to the adjustable hem with its covered cord stoppers. The pièce de résistance? Airvantage technology allows you to control your temperature by inflating or deflating a series of tubes woven into the fabric of the garment. It's an expensive option, but at least you won't need to buy a spirometer such as PowerBreathe: blowing into the adjustable inflation valve gives your lungs a real workout.

Orca Women's Lite Vest, £45.99

Perhaps the most aesthetically pleasing option, this gilet has reflective piping running throughout its design. It's been constructed with a woman's shape in mind, with side panels that curve for a comfier fit. The armholes and hemline are elasticated to keep drafts out, but they are not so restricting as to be uncomfortable. The mesh-lined vents on the back of the gilet are large enough to keep you cool, while a little pouch right at the base can be used either to store the folded garment or to carry a
spare energy gel.

Montane Featherlite Vélo Gilet, £35

True to its name, this gilet weighs only 100g - so light you could lose it in a gentle breeze. Lucky then that its durable water-repellent surface is cunningly constructed to offer a snug fit. 'Afterburner' vents let heat escape, although the nylon shell actually offers the best warmth-to-weight ratio of any product in the Montane range. Scotchlite reflective trimming runs along the zip and on both sides of the torso to make sure you stay visible. Best of all, the gilet screws up into a tiny package, allowing you to carry it in a matching detachable 'stuff sac'.
