Your New Look runnersworld.co.uk

A quick guide to the new site developments

Posted: 26 November 2009

Here at runnersworld.co.uk, we’re excited to bring you news of some important site developments scheduled for next month.

Many of these changes have been driven by ongoing user feedback so we hope you’ll agree that they’ll make runnersworld.co.uk an even more exciting and informative site to use.

What Will Be Changing

As well as giving the site a design spruce-up, we’ll be introducing some new channels and categories - Triathlon, Motivation and Weight Loss for example – to make it easier for you to find relevant articles.

We’ll also have a whole set of new article templates to play with, so you can expect in the weeks to come…

  • more picture-led articles, including slideshows
  • better keyword tagging to help you find content easily
  • quick talkback options for commenting on articles

In addition, here are some of the other new features:

Triathlete’s World Channel
To complement our sister magazine, Triathlete’s World, we will be launching a new triathlon channel packed with news, features, event listings and gear reviews. The triathlon forum won’t be moving – you’ll still be able to chat on your favourite threads and move seamlessly between folders on RW and TW.

Gear Section
After a much-needed revamp, our Gear section will now include better specs (and images) for top products and you’ll also be able to rate (and compare) products by more discerning criteria.  New products and categories will follow so do let us know what you’d like to see featured.

Personal Inbox
Keep track of all your correspondence with other site users from your personal inbox. You’ll be able to send, receive and store messages from other users, and opt to be notified of new messages on your personal email if you so wish.

Also Coming Soon...

Routes Plot and share your favourite running and race routes, search for recommended routes near your home (or further afield) and download files to a GPS unit.

Editor’s Blog As well as our usual, regular dose of expert training features, we’ll also be introducing an Editor’s blog to bring you more up-to-date news in a bite-sized format.

When The Changes Will Take Place

You’ll see the first changes on Tuesday, December 1. There will be around an hour of downtime while we put the final touches on the new site – we’ll post an announcement in the forums on Monday to confirm when this will be.

Once the new site has gone live, if your layout looks wrong or components of the page are missing, the most common reason is that your browser is caching (storing) old elements of the page. To refresh these, press shift-F5 or shift-refresh on a PC; or Apple-shift-R (Firefox) or apple-option-E (Safari) on a Mac. You can also clear your cache completely (though this is not essential and some office systems prevent this). You do not need to clear your cookies.

Get In Touch

Of course, we want to hear all your feedback (positive and negative) about the new site. We’ll start a forum thread on Tuesday for you to post your comments (and to discuss any unforeseen trouble-shooting) or, alternatively, please do drop us a line with your thoughts.

Hello all

We would love to run a lightning-quick pre-launch test of the forum part of the new site this morning, for anyone who has time to have a look. (We know, we know, we wanted this to be a week-long process, covering the whole site, but...)

We’re playing it safe and not messing with the way the forum works (at the moment) – but we still want to make sure it still looks fine for all of you in its new skin, in the browsers you’re using. We’re still working through a few last tidy-ups, mainly on IE6 and to a lesser extend IE8, but please do tell us what you see anyway.

We’d love your feedback about the rest of the site later today (we're aware there are still quite a few gaps on the test site that won't be filled until after the downtime) but for now we’ll only be reading the forum bits (and please forgive us if we don’t respond in person straight away...).

The main things we want to know, please, are

-- does it look wonky and/or is anything missing (if so, which browser are you using (eg Firefox 3.0 on PC), and do you have any special settings (eg are you on a locked-down work system).

-- can you still post messages ok?

You have to log on to the beta site in a slightly roundabout way, using your normal login details. First, go to this page..

http://rw.magicalia.com/members/logon.aspx

When you first submit your details, nothing will happen, but then click the main logo and your nickname should appear in the top right and you will be logged in. Messages you post on the beta site will also appear on this site (and the new site) so feel free to make yourselves at home.

Thanks in advance for your help - we have done lots of testing (honest) but there’s no substitute for real life...

Catherine

Posted: 01/12/2009 at 11:02

Nor me too.

That link doesn't work for me.  I get an error message saying Server Error in '/' Application and a bunch of other stuff.

Posted: 01/12/2009 at 11:03

We're off to a flying start!
Posted: 01/12/2009 at 11:03

A great start! Sorry, please bear with us, I think tech should have finished the most recent upload now so please can you try again? It's working for me now?

Posted: 01/12/2009 at 11:03

I'm in and posting from there!
Posted: 01/12/2009 at 11:05

I'm very small!
Posted: 01/12/2009 at 11:06

Its working and different.
Posted: 01/12/2009 at 11:06

It worked fine for me, I was able to post something.
(I use Firefox)

Posted: 01/12/2009 at 11:09

There are big blank spaces on the right of the screen. (I'm using Firefox version 3:0:15)
Posted: 01/12/2009 at 11:11

It works, but I'm not keen on that big wide advert space on the right.

I suppose I'll get used to it

Posted: 01/12/2009 at 11:11

Home page, main pic missing.
Posted: 01/12/2009 at 11:13

Also, have you checked the new font you are using is 'dyslexic friendly'?

DDA, and all that (not to mention just making life easier).

Hi kk

Thanks, we're aware there are big gaps on the rest of the site (which will be fixed when the site goes down at lunchtime). For now though, we just want to iron out any major compatibility issues (ie things looking crooked or not working properly) ...

Thanks

Catherine

Love the little post it notes in TW:

[presumably RW to put links to 'Weight Loss | Race Nutrition | Hydration' categories in here?]

Can't see anything looking wonky.

Posted: 01/12/2009 at 11:18

Looks ok to me but I'm no expert, actually i'm a technophobe so if I can log on and use it then anyone can.

Same as Wilkie, don't like the huge advertising panel on the side

Posted: 01/12/2009 at 11:21

Someone send me an IM!
Posted: 01/12/2009 at 11:24

Seems to work fine in my firefox, better than the old version of the site.
Posted: 01/12/2009 at 11:24

Well, had a look round and seems to work. Not much different to the old
site, just a makeover. Not a fan of the lettering. Very small and clinical.
But I`m liking it. Can we have more smilies, pleassse.
Posted: 01/12/2009 at 11:26

A lot of avatars are missing.

I'm using firefox

Posted: 01/12/2009 at 11:28

Posted: 01/12/2009 at 11:32

They ditch the members activity table.
Posted: 01/12/2009 at 11:33

I'm in, and it seems ok.  Some missing avatars, and the fonts are a bit small but i'll get used to it.

If you input your email address they will send you the password.  I had forgotten mine, but got this to work.

I've sent you a message, can you retrieve it?
Posted: 01/12/2009 at 11:42

I can retrieve it KK, just can't reply.  I'm switching to firefox to see if it works better
Posted: 01/12/2009 at 11:46

Replied KK, did you receive?

Unfortunately, my school filters will block this soon, already had a profanity block message stop me from going to latest posts.  I will have to do some marking instead

Thanks for the advice but I have "some" work to do and it really isn't important enough to me.
