Obstacle: Skipping breakfast
Name: Ian Pickering
Vital stats: 43 / 180cm / Leicester/ Starting weight 18st / End weight 14st
Old habits
Skipping breakfast every morning left Ian ravenous later in the day, when he would grab junk food on the hoof as he worked running his busy photography studio. "I'd always be tempted to go for the tasty fried options, and I'd usually eat enough for two," Ian says.
New outlook
"Running made me think more about what I ate," says Ian. "I started to eat breakfast regularly, snack on fruit and eat lots of chicken and veg." This stabilised his energy levels and quashed the temptation to reach for crisps and chocolate come the afternoon.
Best tip: Bring a friend
At first Ian was embarrassed to be seen in running kit, but his friend gave him vital encouragement. "My first run hurt like hell, but the sense of achievement drove me to regularly run with Nicola," he says.
