The event is a historic race based on the story of Guto Nyth Bran the legendary runner from the 18th Century. Thousands of spectators watch the mystery celebrity runner run into town and light the beacon to celebrate the Nos Galan races. Alongside the races there is a spectacular fire work display, street entertainment and a small funfair. Nos Galan, the Welsh for New Year’s Eve gave its name to the races which began in 1958. The first year saw four of the best sprinters in Great Britain compete over a 100 yard course in the main street of Mountain Ash. In these early days, a four mile race was held around the streets of Mountain Ash, with the competitors ‘running into’ the New Year, as the races were held at midnight. Over the years the format of the event has changed, with different distances being run. Nowadays, the main race of the evening is a 5km race for senior men and women and an elite race.
