A half marathon trail race that welcomes both runners and walkers. Set in an unspoilt part of mid Essex with the route mostly off road. Now here's the good bit ... There are 5 pubs to visit on the way round with time bonuses for having a bevvy (smaller time bonuses for having a soft drink). You can race or just have a good day out !
The race is based on an old traditional walk which visited the original Ridley pubs. Ridley Brewery and all the pubs were sold about 10 years ago to Greene King. Greene King have since sold many of the original Ridley pubs which have become free houses. The Compasses, an original Ridley pub, where the race starts from is a free house now and is the nearest pub to the old brewery. The owner is Joss Ridley of the Ridley family, he is the son of the owner of the old Ridley brewery and pubs. Joss has kept the pub traditional. There are no beer pumps at the bar.All the beers are taken straight from the barrel in the cellar which is kept at the perfect temperature for real ales. Joss and his brother Nelion Ridley have kept the family tradition alive with Joss running the Compasses and Nelion has since started a brewery called Bishop Nick. There is family history surrounding the story of Bishop Nick which is worth checking out. One of Nelions beers 'Ridley Rite'has been named as the 2nd best beer in England by Camra. You can enjoy a pint at The Compasses before you start the race or when you get back !
