A full marathon with height gain/loss of 6,000 feet: the Hardest Marathon in Britain (it's official: Runner's World February 2006). Run every two years, in 'odd' years.
A run for exceptionally hearty man fellows and lady fellows, entirely on rough tracks, and including superb views over the North Downs, the Mole Gap, Denbies Vineyard, and Dorking.
Two circuits of a very hilly out-and back course. Runners attempting the Midsummer Munro (half marathon) will be using the same course from 4pm on race day.
Add 40% to your marathon PB for an estimated finish time. There is a cut-off of 3.00 to reach the half way point (where you can gain the medal for the Midsummer Munro, at least) and 5 hours to reach the 3/4 way point. Note: all runners will be escorted from the course after 7 hours.
(Those with a marathon PB much outside 3:30 will have trouble finishing the course within 5 hours, those with PBs outside 4:15 will struggle to complete the course inside the 7 hour limit). The race may be postponed until later the same day if temperatures at the start line exceed 28°C.
Please, no crying. Not ever.
ONLINE ENTRY ONLY
The entry fee sounds like a lot, but this includes entry into Britain's hardest marathon (including RW's handling fee), drinks and snacks around the course, your race memento, your race medal and post-race communal picnic. All monies left over after the race expenses will be donated to the race director's chosen charity - MIND, the mental health charity.
PLEASE NOTE: Race entry fees are not refundable under any circumstances (unless the race does not proceed for any reason, in which case entry fees will be refunded minus any administration charge).
Names of runners entering after 12 June will not be included on the race shirt.
WARNING: This is an exceptionally tough race, which will exacerbate any pre-existing injury, and is likely to leave you hobbling for days or weeks afterwards. Take the rest of the summer off!
