Named as Runner's World's 'Top UK Adventure Race' in 2011.
Males or females carry a 'wife' (who must be at least 18 and can be male or female, and does not need to be the carrier's wife) over a distance of around 250m - with a rise of around 10m to the half way point and a straw bale obstacle on both outward and return. There is a water hazard and you will get wet. Only the carrier needs to pay to enter the race.
All those carried must wear a helmet. Wife carrying can be a dangerous activity, which can lead to any one or more of the following injuries: slipped disk, broken legs and arms, spinal damage, facial injury, skull fractures, hernias, and other sundry injuries and illnesses, and potentially including death. But please don't let this put you off! All entrants win Pilgrim Brewery ale, while the winners win a barrel of delicious Pilgrim Brewery ale and £500 towards expenses to attend the World Wife Carrying Championships in Finland in July. Last-placed finishers win the ceremonial Pot Noodle and dog food. All 'wives' must weigh at least 50kg - those 'underweight' must carry a rucksack of tins of baked beans until the required weight is achieved. £100 bonus for the first couple to complete the course using the Reverse Estonian or Dorking Hold (wife-carrying hold No. 69)...
