Astronaut Tim Peake sets Guinness World Record for fastest marathon in space

Tim had to be harnessed to the treadmill during the race due to the absence of gravity.

The fancy dress runners were out in full force at the London Marathon on Sunday and managed to set an incredible 30 Guinness World Records over the course of the day, including Fastest marathon dressed in a full body dinosaur outfit (3:08.34) and Fastest marathon in a four-person costume (5:25.02).

But one record that was really out of this world was set by ESA astronaut Tim Peake, who managed to achieve a brand new Guinness World Record title for the Fastest marathon in orbit (male), running the London Marathon on-board the International Space Station in 3:35.21.

Guinness World Records’ Head of Records Marco Frigatti adjudicated Peake’s attempt via live video link at the European Astronaut Centre of ESA in Cologne. The record for the fastest marathon in orbit by a female is held by Sunita Williams, who ran in a time of 4:24 on 16th April 2007.

'Tim has captured the hearts and minds of the nation since his mission on-board the International Space Station began last year,' says Frigatti. 'His latest achievement is surely his greatest – running the fastest marathon in space, on the only day-off from his gruelling schedule is fantastic accomplishment. Tim is a true inspiration and someone we can all look up to. Literally.'

Meanwhile, here on planet earth, a further 30 official Guinness World Records titles were broken at this year’s London Marathon from 55 listed attempts. The fastest time of all GWR runner records was Sean Fitzpatrick, dressed as a film character, who came in at a speedy 2:39.09.

Guinness World Records adjudicator Adam Brown was at the finish line verifying all of the records. 'The London Marathon is an incredible place to spend an afternoon – the outpouring of emotion from runners and spectators alike is heart-warming. It was a huge privilege to award so many new Guinness World Records titles today, the icing on the cake for the most determined and creative fun-runners. They’ve all raising significant funds for their chosen charities; they’ve earned a place in the Guinness World Records book and are all officially amazing.'
