Europe’s biggest open water swim series opened for entries today.
Great Swim has opened three of its 2013 events for entry: the flagship Great North Swim, which will take place over three days from the June 14 - 16 as well as the Great East Swim in Alton Water Reservoir, Suffolk on June 22 and the Great Manchester Swim in Salford Quays on July 20.
Alex Jackson, event director of the series at event organiser Nova said, “We’re very excited to be able to confirm the first three dates for 2013. In the last five years, we’ve seen the sport go from strength to strength. Our flagship event in Windermere had 2,000 entrants in 2008 - we now expect to welcome up to 10,000 people to the Lake District in 2013.
New for next year’s Great North Swim is a 5km distance option, so swimmers can find the perfect distance to suit their ability. You can choose from a half-mile course suitable for beginners and young people aged 12 and over, a one mile, two mile or new five kilometre distance.
“The events are suitable for everyone from complete beginners all the way up to international athletes,” added Jackson.
“In recent years we’ve also seen amazing performances from some of the world’s top open water swimmers, including Team GBs Kerri-Anne Payne and 2012 Olympic medallist and ten time world champion, Thomas Lurz.”
