Fastest marathon by a marching band

The Huddersfield Marathon Band, consisting of students and friends of the University of Huddersfield, was first created when they took part in the 2011 Virgin London Marathon. The band successfully set a world record for fastest marathon by a marching band, but this record has since been broken. This Sunday they will back and marching again in an attempt to reclaim their former title.

Fastest marathon carrying a household appliance

For Tony Phoenix-Morrison, aged 49 from Tyneside, this will be the 150th time he’s tackled 26.2 and the 62nd time he has gone the marathon distance lugging a 42kg fridge on his back. Tony will be running for Cancer Research UK and says the fridge symbolises the huge burden we all feel if a loved one is struck down by the awful disease. He is also hoping to achieve a Guinness World Record.

Fastest marathon dressed as a telephone box


This Sunday will be Sid Keyte’s fourth marathon to date, but his first in fancy dress. The 43-year-old from Salisbury will don a life-sized telephone box on the day in his bid to raise funds for the charity Mind. An iconic symbol for the capital as well as England, Sid hopes people will enjoy seeing his red telephone box running the route across London town.

Fastest marathon in a wedding dress

A business architect by day and a swimming teacher, triathlon coach and running leader in her spare time, blushing bride 45-year-old Camilla Kerr from Bristol has a busy lifestyle. This will be Camilla’s second marathon and she is hoping to raise as much money as possible for Jubilee Sailing Trust, as her husband has suffered from brain injuries. Camilla will be wearing the same wedding dress she got married in last year to tackle the 26.2 mile route.

Fastest marathon in a full-body animal costume (male)

33-year-old John Melbourne’s decision to dress as a chicken for this year’s Virgin London Marathon was influenced by his passion for poultry. John has six ex-commercial laying hens at his home in Surrey that were rescued by the British Hen Welfare Trust – his charity of choice for race day. This will be John’s 28th marathon and he has been running 70-100 miles per week in preparation.

Fastest marathon wearing chainmail (upper body)

Michael Dodd, 26 from Essex will be running the Virgin London marathon with his upper body completely covered in chainmail. Styled as an English knight, this will be the website developer’s first marathon.

Fastest marathon carrying 20-lb backpack (female)

48-year-old Gill from Banbury previously held the record for the fastest marathon dressed as a bottle. This year she will attempt to set a new Guinness World Records title for the fastest marathon carrying a 20lb pack (female). A Programme Manager for McKesson, Gill is raising money for Cancer Research UK.

Longest crochet chain while running a marathon

This Sunday Susie Hewer, 56, from East Sussex, will attempt to croquet a chain longer than 77.4 m (253 ft) in order to beat her existing Guinness World Records title. She also holds a Guinness World Records title for the longest scarf knitted while running a marathon. Susie will be running her 34th marathon in aid of Alzheimer’s Research UK, who she has been supporting since her mother suffered from it before her death in 2005. Over the years Susie has raised over £30,000 for the cause.

Fastest marathon in a firefighter’s uniform

A genuine firefighter will be attempting to break the existing Guinness World Records title for the fastest marathon in a fireman’s uniform this Sunday. 26-year-old Sam Sellick from Maidstone serves the Larkfield Fire Station and this will be his second marathon to date.

Fastest marathon dribbling a football

47-year-old Andy McMahon from Inverness already has four Guinness World Records titles to his name and is looking to add a fifth as he attempts the fastest marathon dribbling a football. This will be his tenth marathon and he has been practising off road to improve his dribbling technique.
