Race Report: Bupa Great Edinburgh XCountry

US runner Garrett Heath took first place in the 4K race at the Great Edinburgh Cross Country 2014, beating favourites Asbel Kiprop and Kenenisa Bekele.

With a time of 11:51, Heath took his rivals by surprise by finishing one second ahead of Meresa Kahsay. Defending champion Kiprop came in third and Bekele in fifth.

Heath said: “I just put my head down, sprinting and hoping that nobody would come past me.” He added: “This is of course a great start into the New Year and it will give me confidence.”

There was another US victory in the 8K men’s race as 23-year-old Chris Derrick took first place, with an in-form Andy Vernon taking second place and Europe’s Bashir Abdi in third. 

In the women’s 6K race, Gemma Steel put a great performance to take the top spot with Fionnuala Britton of Europe taking second and Emelia Gorecka taking third on her senior cross country debut.

The team competition was won by Great Britain with 159 points, beating Europe with 172 and USA with 203.

Competitors in the junior events also contributed points for the team events. In the junior men’s 6K, Alexis Miellet won first place in 19:07. In the junior women’s 4K race, two British sisters finished seconds apart, Bobby Clay with a time of 13:59 and sister Alex Clay in 14:03.
