Races of the Year 2010: Other Distances

Take on acres of mud at the Sodbury Slog

1. Easy Runner Sodbury Slog 8.5

Gloucestershire, November 14

Running up and down South Gloucestershire’s hills covered in mud and sweat may seem like a strange way to commemorate Remembrance Sunday, but that is what 1,300 of you did in 2010. After a traditional two-minute silence, participants ran an 8.5-mile, multi-terrain course through stunning countryside, tackling paths, fields, ditches, hay bales and mudbaths.

2. Bedford Harriers Oakley 20

Bedfordshire, March 28

A favourite for those preparing for spring marathons, this was a roaring success for the seventh year in a row, thanks to a combination of strong organisation and a scenic, undulating route around the village of Oakley. Enter online now.

3. Autumn Surrey Spitfire 20

Cranleigh, October 3

Undeterred by abysmal weather, 1,000 runners completed this race this year. The 20-miler started in Dunsfold Aerodrome, the site of the BBC Top Gear track, and wound through the pretty village of Dunsfold before finishing back at the aerodrome in front of classic aeroplanes. Enter online now.

4. Maidenhead Easter 10

Berkshire, April 2

A great way to start the Easter weekend and justify feasting on Easter eggs. Held on Good Friday in beautiful sunshine, last year’s race lost none of its appeal and had a wonderful atmosphere, despite a change of venue and route. Enter online now.

5. Kilomathon

Nottingham, March 14

A new event, the Kilomathon is 26.2K (see what they did there?) – about 16.3 miles – making it ideal for runners wanting to test their marathon training or those looking for a guaranteed PB over a new distance. Around 4,200 runners completed the event, which started at Nottingham University and finished in Derby. Find out more.

6. Fred Hughes 10

St Albans, January 24

A multi-terrainer round St Albans with an interesting stingray-shaped route. This well-established race had a new route and new race HQ facilities in 2010. All 800 places sold out in advance and the quality of the marshalling came in for particular praise.

7. Bewl 15

East Sussex, July 4

A challenging multi-terrain race run around Bewl Water and through the lanes surrounding the reservoir, this is an event for all the family. Runners got a fantastic medal and bulging goody bag, while spectators were entertained by a brass band. There was also supervised entertainment for the kids and a barbecue. Enter online now. 8. Les Witton Dartford 10

Kent, January 17

The idea of running through Dartford, the town most famous for its tunnel, might not inspire scenic expectations. But the route through the Garden of England’s leafy lanes is a pleasant surprise. The race HQ at Dartford FC’s Princes Park is also impressively well-equipped.

9. St Valentine’s 30K

Lincolnshire, February 14

Is there a better way to demonstrate true love than running 18 miles through Lincolnshire and Rutland on a February morning? It would appear not as this event, which is limited to 750 runners, sells out every year – with many runners travelling from all over the UK to take part. The goody bag included a packet of the now-legendary Love Hearts sweets. Find out more.

10. Stockport 10

Greater Manchester, December 13

This 10-mile race starts at Woodbank Stadium in Offerton, the home of Stockport Harriers. Last year’s race attracted nearly 800 entrants who enjoyed the town and country route, with two challenging climbs at miles five and eight. Ideal preparation for those running a new year half-marathon or spring marathon.
