Sutton Park Run-Day Instructions

Thank you for entering the Runner's World 20-Mile training run at 9:00am, Sunday 9 March 2003. NB No pre-run registration is required.


Meet at Wyndley Leisure Centre, Clifton Road, Sutton Coldfield, B73 6EB 8.30 for a 9am start. Map here
The run will start in the park from the Visitors Centre. This is on the east side of Sutton Park to the west of Sutton Coldfield town centre.
From the M6 take junction 5 (A452 then A5127) or junction 6 (A5127) and follow signs to Sutton Coldfield.
The Leisure Centre where we will be meeting is adjacent to the track - it's not the building which houses the swimming pool a few hundred yards to the south

Pace Groups

There will be a pace group for each of our eight marathon target bands, and they will be running approximately 15-30 seconds slower than their target marathon pace:      
  • 7:00-7:10 per mile (for sub-3hr marathon): leader: Steve Smythe:
  • 7:30-7:45 per mile (for sub-3:15 marathon) leader: Pete Marsh
  • 8:00-8:15 per mile (for sub-3:30 marathon) leader: Andy Murray
  • 8.30-8:45 per mile (for sub-3:45 marathon) leader: Ros Tabor
  • 9:00-9:15 per mile (for sub-4:00 marathon) leader: Sean Fishpool
  • 10:00-10:15 per mile (for sub-4:30 marathon) leader: Denise Richmond
  • 11:00-11:30 per mile (for sub-5:00 marathon) leader: Nick Troop
  • Run/walk ('Get You Round') (approx sub 5:30) leaders: Pauline Carter/Catherine Perry (5 minutes run, 1 minute walk)

Pacers will endeavour to run as evenly and accurately as possible, but please be aware that the route is undulating and that the distance is an approximate 20 miles.

Everyone to assemble at 8.55am by Visitor Centre Car park. Go to your appropriate pace board. Faster groups will set off first. Please do not overtake the pacer. If you wish to go faster, please do a different route within the park


There is a water station which we pass twice on each lap (six times in total), but we suggest you bring your own if this isn't enough. Note that while there will be some helpers, there will be too many in each group to give water individually to everyone, so you may need to help yourself. Pacers will slow at each water station.


It will be a three-and-a bit lap course* over an undulating/hilly circuit within the park. It's mostly on paths, but there is a small section of off-road each lap.

The route is mostly traffic-free but not entirely so, so be aware of traffic. The route is reasonably straightforward but as it is a training run, there will not be any marshalls. The course is similar to last year except that on the second part of the loop, instead of going straight across after the long hill, you turn right. You then go out and back to the jamboree stone (keep right) and then when back at the junction, resume last year's route.

*NB the run-walk group will do just three laps, which is just under 18 miles and will have a different pacer on each lap.

The final partial lap will be run after three laps have been completed. You can of course complete as many laps as you wish or require. You should bear in mind that the hills will make three laps alone equivalent to 20 flat miles, and you should only do the extra if you're feeling fine.

Be courteous

Please be aware that there will be other users in the park. Please give other runners and cyclists plenty of space. In most places we suggest you should run no more than three abreast.


After the race, free tea and coffee will be available in the upstairs cafeteria in the Leisure Centre. Food can be purchased.


Car parking is available in the Leisure Centre and in the Park itself. Enter the park through Town Gate; the parking is close to the start.


We have hired a changing room at the Leisure Centre where baggage can be left (separate men's and women's). However note the key must be given back to reception after you use it, and we cannot guarantee safekeeping. There are also lockers (£1 deposit) in the main changing room. These will be in

very short supply and are earmarked for use of other leisure centre users and should only be used in emergencies.

If you have arrived by car, we suggest you leave your possessions in the car.
