Looking for your next marathon? Long distance runners with a risky streak may be excited to hear that a top secret marathon is popping up in the capital this autumn.
Taking place on an as yet undisclosed time, date and location at some point in autumn 2016, entering is something of a gamble. But The Secret Marathon promises to be ‘unlike anything you've seen before, taking in some incredible secret urban locations, above and below ground.’
Its unique selling point? Aside from being utterly shrouded in mystery, you don’t have to enter a ballot or raise a penny for charity to participate. You just need to have lots of free weekends at your disposal this autumn.
'The Secret Marathon concept is an idea that we feel resonates well in today's culture of 'pop-up' everything,’ says a mystery spokesperson. ‘The bigger picture is to create a brand of slightly alternative, experiential sporting events, aimed particularly at a younger audience. The team behind the Secret Marathon concept has extensive experience in sports marketing, and we felt that the industry could do with a bit of a shake-up. We are trying to create something that combines cool with a serious athletics event.’
The most they will admit to is ‘some really cool alternative locations of sufficient size to allow for such a course, with just a short amount of public land in between,’ which anyone who’s trained for a marathon in London Town will know is hard to come by.
And if you consider crowd support integral to a successful race day, you may want to reconsider your thirst for the limelight. ‘We see a marathon as a personal challenge,’ says The Secret Marathon. ‘It's just you and 26 miles of sweat. We feel that the 20-somethings of today are fed up of this "Instagram culture" of people over sharing everything they do online, and are reverting back to seeking internal gratification. They gain satisfaction from knowing that they just did something extraordinary, and perhaps nobody else even knows about it until after the event. Modesty is the new cool.’
If running 26.2 miles with virtually no warning sounds like your bag, it’s free to enter but registration closes on 6th May so seize the day. For rather scant race day details, visit www.secretmarathon.com
