First look: Sunspel X Iffley Road running collection

The product: Sunspel X Iffley Road capsule collection: Stanton Technical Polo Shirt - £90, Trent Technical Short  - £95 - www.iffleyroad.com & www.sunspel.com

In a nutshell: Iffley Rd – purveyors of premium running gear with a distinctly heritage aesthetic – and iconic British style brand Sunspel have joined forces to combine performance and classic style.

The technology: It’s not really about the tech, but the dri-release piqué fabric is wicking and quick-drying.

What Iffley/Sunspel say: “We saw a great synergy between both British brands, especially when it came to their commitment to placing comfort, quality and performance at the heart of product design. The modern, elegant cuts combined with signature performance materials mean this is a collection that can take you anywhere - from the track and park, all the way to the pub and office.”

What we say: “As you’d expect this is primarily about style, but there’s certainly a twist of substance in the fabric: Iffley’s signature dri-release piqué is really comfortable to run in and didn’t hold sweat as you’d expect it to at first glance (Iffley claim its wicking properties mean it dries four times faster than cotton). There are zero bells and whistles and, fabric aside, no runner-specific detailing to speak of, but I was pleasantly surprised by how good it felt on the run. More than anything though, I was sold on the stripped-back, simple style. So much so that I got in the habit of wearing the polo shirt in the office all morning before lunchtime runs. So there’s certainly an extra return on the admittedly considerable outlay as it gets you something you’d also be happy wearing in a non-running context. Of course this won’t be for everyone, but for runners with relatively deep and perfectly tailored pockets, this is really beautiful kit.”
