Gear pick of the week: Bellum Active Capri pants

The last few years have seen the rise and rise of female-specific activewear, designed with comfort, style and affordability in mind. Gone are the days of hunting out the least offensive-looking leggings and hefty sports bras from corners of sports shops – there’s a plethora of options for female runners that are as functional as they are flattering.

It takes a lot to stand out in this ever-growing market, but one brand that does it with ease is Bellum Active. Launched by London-based Australian Jodi Kerschl in 2013, who’s taken on events ranging from 5K runs to Ironman triathlons, the range combines performance materials with sharp design.

We put their workout capris to the test and were impressed by how well the nylon and mesh material performs, from keeping us cool during sweaty speedwork to being flexible enough for post-run stretching and foam rolling. Mesh panels behind the knees look chic, but also offer the practical function of ventilation. The wide, comfortable waistband is high enough to offer support around the stomach, though if we were to split hairs we’d say that the very top could be stretchier to move better over the hips when putting them on. That said, the fit was otherwise impeccable, with no riding up or down from the waistband or lower leg hems as we ran. These capris are some of the best we’ve tested and make a sound investment if you keep a limited amount of kit.

The Bellum workout capris are available online for £34.
