Famed for their full cushioning and ‘rolling rocker’ design at the toe, Hoka One One’s Vanquish 2 has these same classic maximal features but with a remarkable lightness. They look bulky, but in the hand and on your feet the low weight (298g for men’s size UK8) is surprising.
This was one of the most cushioned shoes the Runner's World shoe lab in Oregon had ever tested, but somehow manages to pull off the trick of still being responsive and providing a quick heel to toe transition despite the marshmallow levels of sponginess when your foot hits the ground. The insole was a little low on padding for some testers, but this could be remedied by adding a cushioned insert if necessary. They’re most suitable for everyday training and even races of half marathon or longer – a speed shoe for heavier runners and a good long-run choice for others.
The Hoka One One Vanquish 2 comes in men's and women's versions (both £120).
