Gear Pick of the Week: Nike+ Sportband

Nike+ Sportband (£45)

Kerry says: Technophiles among you will know this this is not a brand new release but I'm putting it up as my weekly recommendation because it seems to have experienced a bit of a resurgence recently, with more than a few of my acquaintances extolling its virtues. These endorsements reminded me just what a nifty-but-simple bit of kit the Sportband is.

Essentially, it is a basic speed and distance monitor. It's a pedometer which syncs with a chip you insert into your Nike shoe (if you don't wear Nike shoes you can put the chip inside a show wallet tied to your laces). After initial set up, it measures time, distance, pace and calories burned and after calibration is about 90 per cent accurate.

The watch face doubles as a USB connector and unclips from the strap to be plugged into your computer where you can upload your training stats to nikeplus.com, which enables you to share info and tips with friends, view each other's data, challenge each other and much more.

The device itself is super lightweight and an absolute doddle to set up. It suits new runners, younger image- conscious runners and those who just want basic speed/distance functionality without great cost or loads of extra bells and whistles. Check it out.
