The Ironman Run Trainer GPS 2.0 has landed and we’ve been given a sneak preview at the latest from Timex. The watch has come on leaps and bounds since its predecessor in design; it’s lightweight, slick and stylish. So what does it do? Just about everything.
It has all the features you’d expect from a training watch: it's GPS-enabled to measure pace, speed and distance, is water resistance to 50m, has a 8 hour battery life, a 15 hour workout memory, compatibility with online training software Training Peaks and MapMyFitness, plus some new features that we’re quite excited about; interval training by distance, vibrating alerts and foot pod option for running cadence.
So what’s our verdict? This watch couldn’t have come at a better time in my ‘running career’ – one week before my marathon debut. I was keen to put it through its paces. First up in terms of fit, it is snug, comfortable and despite my narrow wrist, wasn’t too bulky. Most notably for me is its user friendliness, the navigation is very intuitive and not being one for instructions manuals (I tend to think I can always work it out through trial and error) I was in fact able to master the basics in a matter of moments, and off I went.
The display screen is clear and crisp, and there are a number of display options based on preference – a three line split screen worked best for me. Impressed by the basic functions of the watch, I decided to maximise its potential for the big day and set up nutrition and hydration alerts in the desperate last-ditch hope that they would get me round the course. From the word go – or the start line – the Run Trainer 2.0 guided me through my marathon. The 30 minute vibrating alerts kept me on top of my nutrition strategy and prevented hitting the dreaded ‘wall’ and every glance my wrist provided a reassuring nod that things were going in the right direction.
