Nike+ FuelBand SE Preview

The Nike+ FuelBand SE is about to hit the shelves nationwide. We were lucky enough to be given a sneak preview and a somewhat innovative testing experience. The new band looks much the same as the original, with a few splashes of colour here and there, otherwise from the outside, not a lot has changed. However with the latest band comes a whole new world of possibilities. So, what’s new?

The key updates are on the Nike+ FuelBand App as well as new Bluetooth 4.0 technology, which automatically connects the Nike+ FuelBand SE with the App. There is also: improved water resistance, a redesigned circuit board for greater flexibility and an internally-enhanced one button design to drive the LED.

To get the full experience of what it is to use a FuelBand SE, Nike took us through a series of different activities to showcase the best bits. I'm a Fuelband beginner, but naturally embraced the experience once I realised all the activities involved a delicious snack or beverage. There was freshly ground coffee, smoothies and pancakes to be had. Who knew you could earn 54 fuel points grinding coffee and 100 whisking pancake batter?

The key innovation with the Fuelband SE and the driving force behind it is it's encouragement for the user to be active more often – ideally for at least five consecutive minutes each hour; enabling users to ‘win the hour’. The research behind this concept highlights the dangers that come with being sedentary, read more on this here.

The fun and games of the morning's activities were designed to show off the cool bits of the band. Here are the highlights:

Sessions

“3.2.1. GO! Sessions” are a way to track specific activities throughout the day. You can start a session for any activity from a run or gym workout to hoovering or whisking.

Win the hour

This is used to track how much movement is accumulated each hour throughout the day and encourages users to move more often by prompting movement with an encouraging message if you’re missing the day's goal.

Fuel Rate

“Fuel Rate” is a new feature that tracks the rate at which NikeFuel is being earned. This is to see the intensity of your movement to get the right information needed to move better toward your goals.

Groups

The groups functionality and improved social sharing tools have been added to Nike+ FuelBand SE and new App. You can share your data with friends, add pictures, cheer others on or work towards the same goals.

Milestones

New milestones have been added, users can now users earn achievements for not just for their NikeFuel total, but also for: Sessions, Fuel Rate, streaks, and hours won.

Double tap for time

This allows you to access the time instantly at two touches of a button.

Following a fun-filled morning of activities I was thoroughly won over by the Fuelband SE and in full support of Nike’s mission to encourage movement throughout the day. My (secret) hugely competitive nature worries me slightly, but I’m pretty sure I can integrate the band into my life, move more and not become a monster. As a motivational tool to get people out there and running, I think it’s excellent.
