RW Test: Sports Briefs

Many running shorts come with webbing to act as built-in underwear – but these can chafe or, for men, may not provide enough support. Wearing sports briefs under your shorts can make your running more comfortable. Here's what to look for:

Support Your briefs should hold everything firmly in place without being constricting.
Wicking The more you sweat, the more likely you are to chafe, so opt for a fabric that moves moisture away from the body, such as polyester, elastane, nylon and Lycra.
Breathability Look for mesh panelling to provide temperature control.
Comfort Ensure the waistband is wide and fleecy on the inside, the seams are flat and not in uncomfortable areas, and the cut and fit of the briefs looks like they'll stay in place on the move.

Extremely comfortable and wicked sweat away well. The waistband has a towelling inner, and mesh panels around the groin and on the underside provided breathability. The double-layered pouch at the front gave good support without being constricting but the inside of the legs bunched up slightly on longer runs.

Coolmax fabric meant that they wicked sweat away well and regulated temperature, while the flat seams didn't chafe. However, the minimalist cut around the legs caused the pants to ride up, requiring them to be tugged back down on a regular basis. These come up very small, so buy one size bigger than normal.

Extremely light and comfortable to wear, even for long periods. The longer leg design meant they stayed in place and didn't bunch up. Breathability was excellent, while the polyester and Elastane mix of fabrics proved decent wicking ability. The front pouch provided more than adequate support.

The slightly glossy 'ice-finish' fabric gave these the feel of a swimming costume but in fact they wicked away sweat very well and proved exceptional at keeping our runner cool. Fit was slightly on the small side but they held their shape without digging in or chafing.

A good dual-purpose garment, these are underwear but could also be worn as cropped shorts. The fit was good. Elasticated panels around the crotch and on each buttock provided excellent support, but the inner leg had a tendency to ride up.

Dorina D6901 Briefs, £12

These traditional-shaped briefs felt slightly too snug around the waist and a bit too generous around the buttocks, but they stayed in place, except on very long runs. A thick seam across the crotch was irritating. A good all-rounder but not outstanding in any area.
