Evaluation The Wave Phantom is an excellent responsive lightweight racer. But its Wave-less predecessor was a great shoe, too – a supportive, cushioned marathon racer. And, essentially, the Phantom Classic is that shoe with a new upper. What you get is a light mesh upper that feels a little roomier than the Wave Phantom (which is still available), and a single-density EVA midsole that is trainer-like in its thickness.
That heftier midsole is what makes the Phantom Classic such a good marathon shoe. It provides more cushioning and more support than thinner, low-profile speedsters. In fact, the feel of the shoe is more akin to a performance trainer than a racing shoe. So much so that one of our lighter, faster weartesters was quite happy to use the shoe for brisk training runs. It’s more protective, so it’s not the lightest racing shoe available, and although there is more material in the midsole it’s still a shoe best suited to neutral runners.
The Phantom Classic is a smashing marathon racer. If you’re light, fast and efficient you might even find you can use it for fast training. It’s also a good starting point for runners making their first foray into the racing shoe market.
