Evaluation Some of New Balance’s shoes you either like or you don’t – such as the firm but responsive 854. By contrast, the 760 series has a universal appeal. The 763 in particular was unfussy, smooth, fairly stable, nicely fitted and not heavy. Not a shoe for anyone with extreme cushioning or stability needs, but a great-value all-rounder.
The good news is that many runners will find the 764 even better. The midsole has been thickened slightly, which gives better cushioning and a noticeable rise in the heel for a more ‘forward’ running motion. The lacing has also been reworked, as the last version was problematic for runners with narrow feet. The extra cushioning makes the shoe fractionally less responsive, but that’s worth it. It’s now a shoe that’s even more comparable with alternatives at £70-plus.
In short The 764 is a better-cushioned version of the already appealing 763. It’s a straightforward stability shoe for neutral runners and mild overpronators.
