World champion triathlete and member of Team NB, Non Stanford reveals the strategies you need to improve your running
1/ I am the competition
Don’t worry about what others are doing; that’s out of your control. Focus instead on bettering yourself and doing what’s right for you, whether it’s at training, before or during a race, you’ll feel more self-confident.
2/ Rest right
Recovery is just as important as putting in the hard yards. It’s when your body adapts to all the training that you’ve done.
A good night’s sleep, power napping, sofa time; it’s not being lazy, it’s one of the most productive things you can do.
3/ Keep it simple
People seem to obsess about the latest nutrition trends. I steer clear of anything faddy or complicated. Give me gluten, give me dairy and keep the 'free from' well away from me.
I understand some people have genuine medical issues, but don’t create problems for yourself if you’re not one of them. Eat a well-balanced, varied diet. And keep it simple; a glass of milk after a hard session is my standard post-workout go-to.
Relax your breathing, relax your shoulders, relax on the sofa at the end of a hard day, relax your mind before a race. All aspects of performance improve when you are both physically and mentally relaxed.
5/ Have fun
I’ve found that I perform best when I’m happy. The life of an elite athlete can be monotonous and lonely, so I make sure I surround myself with some of my favourite people.
My training partners are also some of my best friends so even the long, hard days are fun. Sport is a great way to meet people and make friends. Capitalise on that and use it to better your performances; happy athletes are successful athletes.
New Balance Toughest Opponent is a story about the battles we have within ourselves. The niggling mind games that play out between our ears that make us question whether to run that extra mile, to lift that heavier weight, or to go forward and push harder, faster and stronger than we did the day before.
