The Palma de Mallorca tourist board has announced that the third annual 261 Women’s Marathon & 10K will include an additional half marathon distance. The only women’s marathon in Europe, the 2016 event will take place on Sunday 10th April in the beautiful city of Palma de Mallorca.
The race is both inspired and backed by Kathrine Switzer, the first woman to officially run the Boston Marathon back in 1967, where she was famously confronted mid-race by an angry official who attempted to rip off her bib number and remove her from the course.
Switzer eluded the official and finished the race, paving the way for future women runners. Her bib number "261” has since come to represent fearlessness and inspired the launch of the 261 Women’s Marathon. While encouraging women’s running is at the forefront of the event, men are still invited to participate, provided they are there to accompany and support their female friends or partners.
