Your trip will start with return flights from the UK to Nairobi with Kenya Airways, followed by the chance to improve your fitness and running prowess with a five-day training camp in Iten. The world’s best runners train at this high-altitude camp set in Kenya’s athletic heartland in the midst of Kenya’s spectacular Great Rift Valley. You will be staying at the Kerio View Hotel, which has magnificent views over the Great Rift Valley. It wouldn’t be unusual to be sharing your breakfast in the company of a roaming zebra.
Of course you will be working on your core, stability and flexibility, but it wouldn’t be a holiday without a tour of the local area or a trip to the local school – St Patrick’s. Then it will be time to get your binoculars in hand for a trip to Lake Naivasha, one of the best spots for bird-watching on earth. Enjoy a stroll by the serene shores of the lake watching a hippo wallowing in the water or the great Kenyan fish eagle gliding overhead. You will spend the night at Lake Naivasha Country Club.
The following morning it will be time to travel to the Maasai Mara, where en route you can take your chances at seeing a lounging lion or cheeky cheetah, before resting and acclimatising in preparation for the Marathon the next day. You will spend the night at Fairmont Mara Safari Club.
Then it will be trainers on and time to take your place with 600 other elite and amateur runners at the start line of the Kenya Airways Maasai Mara Marathon. Now in its fifth year, the off-road trackrun is responsibly cleared of animals the morning of the race. As it is a charity event, the proceeds are put towards the conservation and improvement of the Lemek Conservancy. After the race, you can sip a well deserved sundowner over-looking the magnificent African sunset over the savannah – there really is nothing quite like it!
You will spend the next three nights on safari at Fairmont Mara Safari Club, offering you the chance to explore the beauty of the Mara plains and take your chances at spotting the Big Five. Why not treat yourself to a champagne bush breakfast or balloon flight over the Mara? Soak in the magnificent scenery from above whilst sipping a glass of bubbles – you will have earned it!
On your final day you will drive to Nairobi and have dinner at Kenya’s most famous restaurant – Carnivore, before saying farewell to this magical country and boarding your Kenya Airways flight back to London. We bet you’ll be so ensconced with Kenya’s charm, that it won’t be long before you’ll be back again!
Travel dates are from 5th – 16th September.
Competition close date: 22/5/2014.
