This man also set a new world record at the Berlin Marathon, dressed as Elvis Presley

We previously reported on the record-breaking history of the Berlin Marathon, and this year was no different.  Of course, Kipchoge sealed his place as the greatest marathoner of all time, setting a new marathon world record of 2:01:39, yet he wasn’t the only record breaker. Nikki Johnstone from Düsseldorf became the fastest Elvis Presley over 26.2 miles.

The officially recognised Elvis Marathon world record in the Guinness Book of Records has some pretty precise requirements. In order to be recognised as a record breaking attempt, runners must wear a wig with a typical Elvis quiff, pilot’s glasses, sideburns and a white Elvis one-piece.

Before last weekend, the official Elvis Guinness world record was set in 2014 by Michael Wardian, who ran a 2:38:04 marathon in Las Vegas. Whether spurred on by the record-breaking atmosphere, or the perfect running conditions in Berlin, Nikki Johnstone bettered this time by a whole minute, crossing the line in 2:37:04.

Speaking to Johnstone after the event, he said: “I am delighted that I now hold the official Elvis Marathon World Record. The spectators gave me great support during the race. They had a lot of fun, because you probably don’t see someone in an Elvis costume running a marathon world record every day.”

As well as breaking the Elvis world record, Johnstone wanted to send an important message to those watching. His custom-made Elvis running suit from the Dutch brand Unsanctioned Running was made from recycled PET bottles.
