Keen runner tragically stabbed to death in US

In tragic news, police in Washington DC are hunting for a man who stabbed a female jogger to death in an apparently random attack on Tuesday night.

35-year-old Wendy Karina Martinez, was out for her standard evening run just before 8pm when she was attacked by a knife-wielding stranger. She suffered multiple stab wounds and managed to stumble into a nearby Chinese restaurant, where people tried to save her whilst waiting for paramedics to arrive.

Martinez was rushed to hospital where she later died from her injuries. Police are hunting for her killer.

Martinez was known to be a keen runner, having taken part in the San Diego marathon earlier this year and lived not far from the crime scene. Her family revealed she got engaged a week ago and was excitedly planning her wedding.

Sadly, according to a recent study conducted by Runner’s World, female harassment when running is nothing new. We spoke to ex professional British Boxer and Sporting Performance Coach Cathy Brown to get her top tips on staying safe when out running, and importantly, how to protect yourself in the event of an attack.

Our thoughts are with Martinez’s family and friends at this sad time.
