Running shoe review: Saucony Ride ISO

Saucony Ride ISO white noise running shoes

The Saucony Ride ISO is the neutral, moderately cushioned running shoe that some runners will recognise from the previous 10 versions, but an updated upper means a name change and so the Ride 11 becomes the Ride ISO.

And to that upper; the Ride ISO features ISOFit, the lacing configuration that appears on other models like the also recently rebranded Triumph ISO 4 and is designed to help create a secure fit without generating hot-spots of pressure on the foot. It worked on the Triumph and it works well on the Ride, the independent tabs reduce the amount of bunching when the shoe flexes through the mid-foot.

The only negative to the fit is at the heel cuff; the shoe is slightly over built around the ankle and though comfortable does initially feel somewhat cumbersome, especially if you lace right up to the top eyelets.

Aside from this, comfort is at a premium. The Ride has always been about plushness and this version is slightly thicker than previous models but manages to keep the weight down and still features an 8mm drop from heel to forefoot. The EVERUN foot bed plays its part in the comfort, 3mm of soft foam under the sockliner provides that initial shock absorbing padding upon landing and then the PWRFOAM in the sole handles the rest of the forces running generates with ease.

All that foam might make it sound like this is a big running shoe, but for all its cushioning it delivers nimble and fast feeling sensations when out on the road or path. It’s a great training shoe for racking up the miles but can handle those tempo runs too. It’s a worthy inheritor of the Ride title.

The version we tested was the ‘White Noise’ colourway, the same shoe as a standard Ride ISO but the all-white theme denotes it’s part of a collaboration between Saucony and Ben Martynoga, a British neuroscientist, who has been looking into the fascinating connection between running and the brain, and how the sport can have a positive impact on our state of mind and help tune out distractions of everyday life.
