It was announced today that The Vitality Big Half will return to the streets of London in 2019. The iconic race, starting in Tower Bridge and finishing in Greenwich, launched this year, with more than 11,000 runners taking to the streets of London, despite the days of snow leading up to the race.
Sir Mo Farah won last year’s race, crossing the line in 61 minutes 40 seconds, beating Kenya’s Daniel Wanjiru who finished three seconds later.
The elite women’s race was a battle between Aldershot & Farnham District duo Charlotte Purdue and Lily Partridge, who ran side-by-side for most of the race, before Purdue won with a new PB of 70 minutes 29 seconds. Partridge was a close runner-up, finishing 30 seconds later with a time of 71 minutes 6 seconds.
Hugh Brasher, The Vitality Big Half Event Director said: “When we launched The Vitality Big Half, we set ourselves a target of making it the first mass participation event that truly reflects London’s unique diversity while also bringing together the best athletes in the world. We said we wanted an event that was truly global and uniquely local and we achieved that today.
We saw Sir Mo Farah- the multiple Olympic and World Championships gold medallist – win the elite men’s race and thousands of runners from a whole range of communities and backgrounds running in the mass race, many of whom were taking on the challenge of a half-marathon for the first time.
“We want to get people from all backgrounds into running. We are passionate about making sport something that should be accessible to all. This is a long-term project and today was just the start.”
