3 reasons to run in the morning

A new study has found a morning workout is a habit shared by 59 per cent of highly successful people. ‘Feeling a sense of accomplishment early on can help carry you through the day,’ says mental performance coach Midgie Thompson. Here are three more reasons to get up and go.

Skip fewer sessions

‘People who exercise in the morning are more likely to stick with their training because there’s less chance of other things – such as a lunch invite or an after-work get-together – getting in the way,’ says Thompson. So you can enjoy that post-work drink with a clear conscience.

Be more productive

Research from the University of Bristol showed that a workout improved workers’ mental sharpness and time management. In particular, they felt better able to handle problems. ‘More energy, less stress and a better mood will prepare you to take on the day’s challenges,’ says Thompson.

You’ll eat better

When we exercise, we feel better about ourselves – and that, says Thompson, makes us more likely to opt for healthier food and lifestyle choices. A caveat: after a hard or long run you might want to reward yourself with a deliciously unhealthy treat. Resist this powerful craving – some of the time.
